Wishing my Hindu readers a Happy Thaipusam. In Malaysia, since 1892, the Thaipusam festival is celebrated in the Tamil month of Thai (which falls in late January/early February) at Batu Caves. Batu Caves is said to be 400 million years old. Originally the caves were inhabited by the indigenous Temuan Tribe and later around the 19th century was frequented by the Chinese to excavate guano for fertilisers. A Tamil trader K. Thamboosamy Pillai, inspired by the veil-shaped entrance of the main cave, dedicated it as a temple to Lord Muruga. Wooden steps up to the Temple Cave were built in 1920 and have since been replaced by 272 concrete steps. It's pretty steep to climb. So if you want to burn some calories and see the splendour of the caves at the top of the steps have a go at climbing the steps of Batu Caves.
Happy holidays to all Malaysian.

See you soon,
Umi
